Welcome to Rando Bento

We're on a mission to make trail food that's actually worth eating. Here's our story.

Born on the Trail

In 2024, I left my full-time job in Amsterdam and stepped into a very different life: I became a long-distance hiker. That year took me across some of the world’s most iconic trails — the Camino de Santiago (French Way), the Tour du Mont Blanc, a kora (a sacred circumambulation) around the sacred Mount Kailash, the Annapurna Circuit, the Kumano Kodo, and more.

On the trail, I experienced everything from scrambling up a cliff under the blazing midsummer sun in Marseille, to pushing forward into a full blizzard at over 5,000 meters in the breathtaking — and breath-stealing — Himalayas. Through all of it, one thing became very clear: Food makes a huge difference out there—not just as fuel, but as comfort, motivation, and joy.

During a hike in Japan, our minshuku hosts prepared beautiful bento boxes for us to take as lunch on the trail. Simple, thoughtful, delicious — and the highlight of the day. It made me wonder: why can’t hiking meals always be like this? Lightweight. Nutritious. Delicious. Wholesome. Worth carrying. Something to look forward to, not tolerate.

That question sparked the idea for Rando Bento — meals inspired by Japanese bento traditions, crafted for hikers and outdoor adventurers.

What's Next

We're launching with three meals and a big appetite for feedback. Try our meals on your next adventure and let us know what you think. Your feedback directly shapes what we make next.

Happy trails!
